Observation of an extrinsic critical velocity using matter wave interferometry

چکیده
We report an experiment that uses a superfluid helium quantum interference device to probe the initial onset of the motion of a single vortex line driven by axial flow in a macroscopic channel. When the superfluid velocity reaches a temperature independent critical value !vc#1 mm/s" periodic 2! phase slippage occurs with a frequency of the order of a few Hz. As the axial flow velocity increases, the frequency increases, possibly stepwise.

Reinterpretation of the effects of the Earth's rotation and gravity on the neutron-interferometry experiment
– The phase shift of matter wave due to the Earth’s rotation and gravity has been demonstrated in the neutron-interferometry experiments where the Bragg reflection of the neutron wave from crystals is used to form a closed path. In the literature, the rotationinduced phase shift is ascribed to an extra energy term associated with angular momentum in the Hamiltonian. In this investigation, based...
متن کاملSagnac interferometry using bright matter-wave solitons.
We use an effective one-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation to study bright matter-wave solitons held in a tightly confining toroidal trapping potential, in a rotating frame of reference, as they are split and recombined on narrow barrier potentials. In particular, we present an analytical and numerical analysis of the phase evolution of the solitons and delimit a velocity regime in which sol...
متن کاملTime-lapse change in near-surface shear-wave velocities caused by rainfall and large earthquakes detected by applying seismic interferometry to earthquake data
Shear-wave velocity is an indication of the shear strength of the ground since the velocity is related to the shear modulus. Therefore, monitoring the velocities is useful for site characterization and disaster prevention. We estimate the time-lapse change in shear-wave velocity as well as shear-wave splitting in the shallow subsurface throughout Japan by applying seismic interferometry to the ...
متن کاملMonitoring a Building Using Deconvolution Interferometry. I: Earthquake-Data Analysis
For health monitoring of a building, we need to separate the response of the building to an earthquake from the imprint of soil-structure coupling and from wave propagation below the base of the building. Seismic interferometry based on deconvolution, where we deconvolve the wave fields recorded at different floors, is a technique to extract this building response and thus estimate velocity of ...
